Custodian

Primary Purpose:
Perform general custodial duties at the assigned campuses. Follow routine cleaning procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds.
Education/Certification:
  • Valid Texas driver’s license
Experience:
  • Two years of experience in custodial or similar work preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Knowledge of basic construction, routine maintenance, and repair procedures
  • Knowledge and experience with more skill-intensive areas of school cleaning and maintenance
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally)
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies
  • Ability to work independently
Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Custodial:
  • Follow an assigned schedule, clean classrooms, portable units, restrooms, kitchens, multi-purpose areas, office, hall and walkways, and outdoor facilities.
  • Sweep, scrub, mop, strip, seal, wax and polish floors; vacuum, dust, polish and wash classrooms, offices, furniture and woodwork, light fixtures and hardware; clean restrooms, including doors, mirrors, sinks, walls, floors, toilets, hardware and fill dispensers and receptacles as needed.
  • Move, arrange and set up furniture and equipment in preparing classrooms, auditoriums or other activity areas for special events, activities or meetings, clean and make repairs of non-technical nature to keep assigned areas operative, safe and clean; adjust shades, blinds, desks, chairs and other furniture.
  • Replace light bulbs, empty and cleans trash and garbage cans and replace liners; sweep walkways, concrete and blacktop surfaces immediately adjacent to the school buildings.
  • Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
  • Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed.
  • Assist with relocation of furnishings, such as desks, tables, chairs, file cabinets, etc.
  • Perform preventative cleaning to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff.
  • Assist in setting up facilities for special events.
  • Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging tables.
  • Sort and store items in the warehouse.
  • Take physical count inventory periodically.
  • Respond to emergency calls as needed.
Safety:
  • Assist with opening the building each school day, if shift work requires.
  • Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
  • Check daily to ensure that all exit doors except the main entrance are locked and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy.
  • Operate equipment and use tools following established safety procedures.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  •  Maintain tools and equipment and perform preventive maintenance as required.
Equipment:
Mop, vacuum, broom, carpet cleaner, floor buffer, some power or hand tools, ladder.
Other:
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Complete required training each year as directed by Facilities Coordinator.
  • Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent district wide travel
  • Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress

  • Excessive noises
  • Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
  • Work around moving objects or vehicles
